Can the Computer Learn to Play Music Expressively?

چکیده

A computer system is described that provides a real-time musical accompaniment for a live soloist in a piece of non-improvised music. A Bayesian belief network is developed that represents the joint distribution on the times at which the solo and accompaniment notes are played as well as many hidden variables. The network models several important sources of information including the information contained in the score and the rhythmic interpretations of the soloist and accompaniment which are learned from examples. The network is used to provide a computationally e cient decision-making engine that utilizes all available information while producing a exible and musical accompaniment.

Modeling Embellishment, Timing and Energy Expressive Transformations in Jazz Guitar

 Professional musicians manipulate sound properties such as timing, energy, pitch and timbre in order to add expression to their performances. However, there is little quantitative information about how and in which context this manipulation occurs. This is particularly true in Jazz music where learning to play expressively is mostly acquired intuitively. In this paper we describe a machine le...

Spectral Learning for Expressive Interactive Ensemble Music Performance

We apply machine learning to a database of recorded ensemble performances to build an artificial performer that can perform music expressively in concert with human musicians. We consider the piano duet scenario and focus on the interaction of expressive timing and dynamics. We model different performers’ musical expression as coevolving time series and learn their interactive relationship from...

Duet interaction: learning musicianship for automatic accompaniment

Computer music systems can interact with humans at different levels, including scores, phrases, notes, beats, and gestures. However, most current systems lack basic musical skills. As a consequence, the results of human-computer interaction are often far less musical than the interaction between human musicians. In this paper, we explore the possibility of learning some basic music performance ...

Generate expressive music from picture with a handmade multi-touch music table

The multi-touch music table is a novel tabletop tangible interface for expressive musical performance. User touches the picture projected on the table glass surface to perform music. User can click, drag or use various multi-touch gestures with fingers to perform music expressively. The picture color, luminosity, size, finger gesture and pressure determine the music output. The table detects up...

Improvised duet interaction: learning improvisation techniques for automatic accompaniment

The interaction between music improvisers is studied in the context of piano duets, where one improviser performs a melody expressively with embellishment, and the other plays an accompaniment with great freedom. We created an automated accompaniment player that learns to play from example performances. Accompaniments are constructed by selecting and concatenating one-measure score units from a...
